Rights Respecting School

"Whoever we are we have the right to live happily in the world"

This initative is based around the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child – it will help to form a moral code within the school and will allow the children to develop a very clear understanding of their rights but also their responsibilities within the school and their local and global community.  Through this work the children will have a much stronger voice within the school to help us to drive the school forwards.

What We're About

The Steering Group is helping the school to achieve Rights Respecting Schools level 1.

Rights Respecting School is about telling children about their rights and responsibilities.

We're helping people understand that we have rights and responsibilities.

We're improving pupil voice.

What We've Been Doing

We surveyed children to see how we could raise pupil voice.

We organised a Rights Respecting Assembly, based around the right not to be picked on or hurt.  This raised awareness of bullying.

We raised awareness of our rights and the work our group is doing by sending out leaflets, talking to the teachers and classes and putting up displays around the school.  We also organised a rights respecting "hunt".

We wrote to the council regarding road safety.

We designed a leaflet for all children and parents to show the rights we are focussing on each term for next year.

What the Whole School Have Been Doing

We linked with another rights respecting school and did a learning walk to see how they were embedding rights respecting into their school.

We created Charters for each class, lunch time and for the playground - they are the rules for behaviour turned into our rights and responsibilities and are displayed in all classrooms and around the school.

An assembly were held explaining what rights and responsibilties mean and focussing on certain rights to draw awareness to issues.  When we focussed on bullying each class contributed art, songs, poems, drama to develop an ethos of looking after each other.

Classes have been doing art work and we held an art exhibition for the parents.  Each class contributed to a rights respecting "garden" display.

There has Drama in classes to act out rights.

What We're Doing Next

We've set up a link with another Rights Respecting School in Stoke and will be sharing ideas.

We're planning events to take place next year, these are some of them:

Quiz for parents/children.

Write to the Government about providing fruit for KS2 children.

Meet with an officer from the traffic division of the council to discuss road safety.  Design a letter to parents to raise awareness of road safety.

We will continue to meet every 2 weeks to talk about what we've been doing and to create new plans .  Every week we will have a slot at an assembly to gather the views of pupils.  We will be working in partnership with the school council.
